Strange noises
Banging, gurgling, whistling or kettling noises can indicate limescale build-up, air in the system, pump problems or low water pressure. Don't ignore them — they usually get worse.
Inconsistent heating or hot water
Radiators taking longer to heat, hot water running lukewarm, or the boiler cycling on and off frequently are signs of an underlying fault.
Pressure dropping repeatedly
If you're topping up the pressure every few days, there's likely a leak in the system or a faulty component. A one-off drop after a service is normal; repeated drops are not.
Yellow or orange flame
A healthy boiler flame is blue. A yellow or orange flame suggests incomplete combustion and potential carbon monoxide risk — call an engineer immediately.
Error codes on the display
Modern boilers display fault codes when something is wrong. Note the code, reset the boiler and call an engineer if it recurs. The code helps with diagnosis.

Should I keep using my boiler if I notice a warning sign?
For a yellow flame or gas smell, switch off the boiler and call an engineer immediately. For other symptoms you can often continue using the boiler until an engineer attends, but don't delay the repair.
