Lower your combi flow temperature to 55–60°C
Modern combis are shipped at 75–80°C — too hot for condensing mode. Dropping to 55–60°C keeps the boiler in condensing mode, saving 6–8% of gas use. Radiators still warm the room, just more slowly and evenly.
Turn the thermostat down by 1°C
Each 1°C drop cuts heating bills by around 10% (Energy Saving Trust). 20°C to 19°C is barely noticeable and worth £100+ a year on average.
Fit TRVs and use them
Thermostatic radiator valves let you turn down bedrooms and unused rooms. Payback is 1–2 years on most homes.
Bleed and balance radiators
Air and imbalance waste heat. See our how-to-bleed-radiators guide, or book a system balance visit.
Service the boiler annually
A serviced boiler runs 5–10% more efficiently than a neglected one and lasts longer. Skipping the service is false economy.
Consider a smart thermostat
Geofencing and learning schedules typically save 10–20%. See our smart-thermostat-benefits guide.

Does turning the heating off completely save more than leaving it low?
Yes, for most homes. The old myth about it being cheaper to leave heating on low all day has been debunked by the Energy Saving Trust — only heat when you need it.
Is a new A-rated boiler worth it for savings alone?
If your existing boiler is G-rated (pre-2005) or B/C-rated and beyond economic repair, yes. Efficiency jumps from ~70% to 92%+. See our new-boiler-installation-cost guide.
