Power Flushing — Is It Worth It?

Power flushing removes sludge and rust from your central heating system, restoring circulation and efficiency. Here's what it involves, when it's needed and whether it's worth the investment.

What is power flushing?

A power flush uses a high-flow pump and cleaning chemicals to dislodge and remove sludge, rust and debris from radiators, pipes and the boiler heat exchanger. The system is then treated with inhibitor to prevent future build-up.

Signs you need a power flush

Cold spots on radiators (especially at the bottom), dirty brown or black water when bleeding, boiler kettling noises, slow warm-up times, repeated pump or valve failures and new boiler installation (most manufacturers require it).

Is it worth the cost?

If sludge is causing your symptoms, a power flush can transform the system's performance and protect expensive components like the boiler heat exchanger. If the problem is elsewhere (e.g. undersized radiators, a failing boiler), a flush won't help — we diagnose before recommending.

How much does it cost?

Power flushing is priced per radiator, typically from £400–£700 for a typical house depending on system size. Adding a magnetic filter at the same time is discounted.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a power flush take?

Between four and eight hours for most systems. Heavily sludged systems can take a full day.

Can power flushing damage old pipes?

Very old or fragile pipework needs a gentler approach. We assess the system first and recommend the safest method.
