Check the basics first
Is there power to the boiler? Check the fused spur switch on the wall and the household consumer unit. Is the thermostat calling for heat and set above room temperature? Are the timer / programmer settings correct?
Check gas supply
Try a gas hob. If gas isn't reaching your appliances, check the emergency control valve at the meter is open and no credit meter has run out. If other appliances are fine but the boiler isn't lighting, the fault is at the boiler.
Check boiler pressure
Most modern boilers won't fire below 0.5 bar. Top up the filling loop to 1.2 bar cold. If pressure drops again quickly, see our why-boiler-loses-pressure guide.
Faulty components requiring an engineer
Common culprits are a failed ignition electrode, gas valve, flame sensor, PCB or fan. All require a Gas Safe registered engineer — we cover Kingston, Twickenham, Richmond, Surbiton and every KT/TW postcode.

How many times should I try to reset a boiler?
Two or three attempts. If the boiler locks out again, stop resetting — you risk masking a fault that needs proper diagnosis.
Is a boiler that won't fire dangerous?
A boiler that doesn't ignite isn't burning gas, so it isn't a carbon monoxide risk. However, if you smell gas at any point, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately.
